Winterizations
November is the perfect time to start preparing for extreme cold, snow, and ice. We can start by preparing our vehicle for the winter:
•Winterize your vehicle or have your vehicle serviced by a reputable dealer, garage or mechanic.
•Check your wipers, tires, lights, and fluid levels regularly. Make sure the brakes and transmission are working properly. Lubricate door and trunk locks to prevent them from freezing.
•Prepare a Winter Storm Survival Kit for your vehicle. A kit is important even for short trips. If you have an accident or your vehicle breaks down, you may be waiting several hours for assistance to arrive. Your kit should include:
✓ Cell phone and charger
✓ Blankets/sleeping bags
✓ Flashlight with extra batteries
✓ First Aid kit
✓ Knife
✓ High calorie, non-perishable foods
✓ Water
✓ Extra clothing to keep dry
✓ A large empty can and plastic cover with tissues and paper towels for sanitary purposes
✓ A smaller can and water-proof matches to melt snow for drinking water
✓ Sack of sand (or cat litter)
✓ Shovel
✓ Windshield scraper and brush
✓ Tool kit
✓ Tow rope with loops (avoid chains and hooks if at all possible)
✓ Booster cables
✓ Water container
✓ Compass and road maps
EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM
By enrolling in the Smart Message - Community Alert Network, you can now stay connected by receiving up to the minute Emergency Alerts from local officials regarding immediate or pending threats to public safety or property, where immediate notification is necessary. Examples include evacuation recommendations, boil orders, water main breaks, and crime alerts.
This service allows you to sign up to receive emergency and non-emergency notifications through your preferred method of communication. This could include a cell phone, work phone, text message, e-mail, home phone, and more. You can also choose the locations you want to be contacted about. You can receive notifications about emergencies and other events that may impact the area around your home, your parents' home, your workplace, and your child's school, as long as those locations are within the boundaries of a participating Will County community.
